We recently got a chance to lay our hands on Spice Stellar Mettle Icon Mi-506, thanks to a telephone shop nearby. We were able to do a quick review of the mobile phone, and here is what we have concluded from our quick survey. Lets find out in the below observations, if the mobile is worth giving a try.
The phone drew our attention, especially because of its design, which reminds us of HTC’s One, which didn’t do well in the android market, but was appreciated for its unique design. The phone comes with 3G support and is launched at the price of Rs.6999, but we noticed that the phone is available at a higher price in the market. The device is a 5 inch display, with 199ppi resolution.
The phone come in a standard box, with regular design, with all the required accessories.
What you will get in the box??
- The handset, Spice Stellar Mettle Icon (silver)
- USB cable (white)
- Wall charger (white)
- iPhone style earphones (again white)
- Flip cover
- Scratch Guard
- User manual, warranty card and safety card
As written earlier, the phone attracted us because its HTC One type design, with black bezel on the sides of the display and metal enclosures at the top and bottom. Because of the plastic bezels and the metal enclosures, with the 5inch display, the height of the phone is way to much to handle (Note: For the same design, HTC One had a 4.7inch screen). At the top front side, there are proximity sensors, front facing selfie camera, calling speaker. Spice has preferred capacitive buttons for navigation. There is no Spice logo on the front side of the phone.
At the backside, the 8MP camera is located on the top central region, with flash just below the camera. On the bottom end of the phone, there is a huge speaker grill on the plastic bezel. Just above the grill, on the metal part is the Spice embossing, just the name and no logo.
On the left side of the phone, there is the standard power button, located above the volume rockers. All the buttons, are metal finished, but the locations of the buttons might be just a little bit awkward to use, as they are located on the other side, than we are normally used to see.
The huge 5inch screen comes with a resolution of 854*480, which turns out to 196ppi. The screen resolution is not the best in class, and there are many phones out there with a better resolution. Though said that, the screen is not the worst, but t better ppi screen would have pleased us more. The viewing angles (We reviewed in the shop, outdoors with much brighter sunlight) were not large, and the display gave better results when watched straight. The screen is not much vibrant under the sunlight, and have to manually adjust the brightness to watch the text. The screen is very reflective, and this increases difficulty to see the text under the sun. We inspected the phone in broad day light during the noon, and it will display better in low lights, even in outdoors.
The phone runs on android OS, version 4.2 Jelly Bean. There is no word from the company for any update to latest android OS in the future. Most of the OS, is stock android with very little customizations from Spice. The log press of home button, navigates to Google Now, and there seems no option to kill recent process of the apps. Users will require to install, apps from Google Play, to kill the latest apps.
Yes, to be frank, Spice needs to work on the camera app and consider including more options. The phone comes with an 8MP front facing and 1.3MP front facing. The camera app lacks the option of “Touch to Focus” which makes it difficult to click a focused and sharp snap. The camera has all the stock options, which other phones running on Android 4.2 Jelly bean offer, some of which include panorama, HDR, white balance. The outdoor images were acceptable, but indoor and low light images were washed out. The camera is capable of recording videos of 720p HD resolution, but same as the camera, the issue of focusing persisted.
The phone supports Dual SIM, and also has a SD card slot. The phone is powered by 1.3GHz dual core processor, with a battery backup of 1800mAh. The battery is of low rating as compared to the screen size. Most of the phone from other manufacturers in this segment are backed by at least 2000mAh battery. The phone had 512MB RAM, and internal memory of 4GB. The phone supports external SD card, which can be used to extend the memory to 32GB further.
The phone is overall well designed, reminding of HTC’s One, but Spice needs to work on the camera app and also should push an update to kill the recent apps running in the background.Review : Spice Stellar Mettle Icon Mi-506http://www.gadgetcluster.com/2014/04/review-spice-stellar-mettle-icon-mi-506/http://i0.wp.com/www.gadgetcluster.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/spice-stellar-mettle-icon-mi-506-1.jpeg?fit=154%2C400http://i0.wp.com/www.gadgetcluster.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/spice-stellar-mettle-icon-mi-506-1.jpeg?resize=150%2C150 MOBILESpiceReview
