Sony believes that the PS4 sales will exceed its earlier gaming console’s lifetime sales. Sony Computer Entertainment’s President and CEO Andrew House in an interview to MCV said that the company believes the new gaming console’s sales will pass that of its earlier version.
Sony’s earlier gaming console PS3 has recorded lifetime sales of 80 Million units. The major difference in the two consoles is the price tag. While PS3 was launched with a initial price of $499/$599 in 2006 as compared to PS4’s launch price of $399.
Andrew was quoted saying
We start off with a price point that is much more consumer friendly than was there for the PS3.
One of the other reason why Sony would except PS4 sales to exceed PS3 is the growing market for the new console.
Also, one of the success stories for the business as a whole has been our ability to open up new geographies for video games over the last five years. You are seeing opportunities for new markets that we haven’t tapped into.
He also added that PS3 console took a long time to add non-gaming entertainment, while PS4 has all those features right from the day one, citing as one important reason for PS4 sales to exceed that of PS3.
Sony has set a target of 5 Million units of PS4 sales before the end of this fiscal year i.e by march 2014. Sony, till now has sold 2.1 Million units of PS4 in less than a month.
